Clifton Callender

I’m active as both a composer and theorist and have written a wide variety of instrumental and vocal music, seeking to create works that are firmly situated in the present while freely embracing the rich resources of musical traditions. My creative and scholarly work often connects with mathematics, including self-similarity and infinite canons, quotient spaces and voice leading, and calculus and tempo. Recent compositions includes a focus on climate change, as music and the other arts can serve to help process the psychological baggage and negative emotions arising from awareness of the crisis.

I’m a Professor of Composition in the College of Music at Florida State University and currently serve as Co-Editor of Perspectives of New Music. I have previously served as Co Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mathematics and Music and on the editorial boards for PNM, JMM, and Music Theory Spectrum.
